Video Notes

Introduction

This video was used for the first play introduction video of the DVD. It features the song The Poltergeist from the Penumbra (1996) collection.

Selection Study 001

This was the first of two attempts on this collection to create a stop motion video of a piece of art being created. The quality is due to the face that my first miniDV cameras "Photo" button simply recorded a 10-second still shot onto tape.

My Garden

This video is essentially a tour of the first garden I planted in Akron after moving to my apartment on Marvin Avenue in the Highland Square neighborhood. It features the song "Best Ghost" from the Malayze Dias (2000) collection.

Latticework III

This my the second of two attempts on this collection to create a stop motion video of a piece of art being created. For this one, I scanned-in each step along the way, which resulted in better quality, but the end result was still lacking.

Highland Square Art Fest

This video was created in the Summer of 2004 and features the annual art festival that took place at the corner of Market Street and Portage Path in the Highland Square neighborhood of Akron, Ohio. It features the song "Doin' Time" by the band Sublime.

Indiana Rock & The Temple of Zoom!!!

At some point, I sent an old Hi-8 video camera to my friend Travis who was living in Monterrey, California, at the time. I told him to shoot video of whatever he wanted and then send it back to me. I got this great footage of him riding his motorcycle through the trails in Big Sur, and while I was watching it, this song was going through my head the entire time.

Leaves

This video features myself raking leaves in the backyard of the apartment on Marvin Avenue.

Remember When

My idea for this video was simply to allow the viewer to witness the process of solo multi-track recording. In it, you will see each track of the song being recorded and synched-up. Like most of the videos I've made over the year, it was more an exercise in seeing IF something could be done, but the concept turned-up to be a fun one to watch and I liked the song as well, which was a plus. I did this again on the Stillbirth (2007) collection, pairing it up with another version of the Union & Parkwood video I created for the Akroness (2004) collection.

Personal Thoughts

The thing about this collection of music is that it represents the last time I honestly tried to take creating art seriously. Up to this point, I had been more-or-less faithful to the idea of assembling a collection of music and/or videos every year, something that would show the world what I was up to that year, because that's basically all I did and what I considered "who I was" whatever that means.

After assembling Union Point Sessions, I realized that I had to get a decent computer-based multi-tracking platform, and decided to go with the Digidesign Mbox that was bundled with ProTools LE and some other software. It came to me easily because it's what I used when I was in college, and to this day I'm very happy with the quality of the recordings, if not with the quality of the content itself.

I had moved to the bottom floor of a duplex on Marvin Avenue in the Highland Square neighborhood of Akron, Ohio. It was a bad choice because I lived underneath two college girls and it was never quiet enough to record music because they were either walking around or playing music. It wasn't until the new year of 2004, when they were (unfortunately?) shipping-off to Iraq (they were ROTC students at the University of Akron) that I was able to start recording music again. The next year was spent recording music and creating the videos. Again, this was the last time that I recorded songs over-and-over again, really working on lyrics and instrumentation, which is why there are so many different versions of songs throughout the collection.

In the new year of 2005, I had knee surgery and discovered that the girls were moving back to the apartment, so I made plans to move into a duplex on the other side of Highland Square with two friends. This collection was finished during the move in April 2005, after which I experienced my first real bout of creative writer's block.
